New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
