The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
