The megacity Awakens to Toxic Haze Post Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city registered an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy level recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected regional government petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and public health".

Court Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Numerous recording stations throughout the city showed pollution peaking around late evening to some of the worst levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have continued as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Various Pollution Sources

The problem in the capital is attributed to a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating toxic haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing ten thousand early fatalities annually in Delhi.
