The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
