The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the harbor city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she posted on social media several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her dad.
A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been charged of inciting this violence and faces accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence.
Background of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has always rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the state's evidence as insufficient.
She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an effort to address political disputes with her dad after he started his own party and ran against the ruling party.
Backing and Case Arguments
This was echoed by the foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his family.
A small number of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the evidence presented by the state is inadequate and lacks compelling evidence for a criminal finding.
