British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
